Diseases
Despite the wide variety of insects and diseases that may affect an olive tree, this is probably the most resistant tree to these risks.
Eacock Eye
Originated by Spilocacea oleagínea, is a fungal disease harmful to the Olive Tree. It causes a weakness of the tree, where the notorious effect of this fungus is visible through "dots" on the foliage which resemble a Peacock eye. When attacked the stalk of the fruit gets vulnerable and this disease could lead to the fall of the same prematurely. Conditions favorable to the appearance: Temperatures between 12 and 15 º C, Spring and High Levels of humidity.
Gafa
Originated by Gloeosporium Olivarum is another fungal disease. It affects mainly the fruits and their weight loss and subsequent premature fall. Olives affected by Gafa will automatically increase the acidity of olive oil.
Cercosporiose
Originated by Cercospora cladosporioides. Nature of fungal disease, attacks the weaken trees and causes premature defoliation. It is well known in Portugal, there are no economic indicators that can be analyzed.
Fumagina
Originated by Capnodium. Fungus is characterized by branching foliage of black / gray. This disease has the effect of stopping the process of chlorophyllin sheets which may trigger the choking of the tree and consequent death.
TB
Originated by Bacterium savastonoi. Very serious bacterial illness for Olive Trees Characterized by the formation of "cysts" throughout the trunk and branches.
Olive Cotton
Euphyllura Olivine. Triggered by an insect that feeds on the sap may cause the lack of development in the tree. The effect is visible in the branches and foliage, by a white secretion that is present and remains resembling cotton.
Olive Tree Moth
Prays oleae. Another insect detection very difficult. Beginning in the fall and by spring, attacks the foliage and forming galleries, the final stage, roi shoots. Once and if that is not achieved the elimination of the insect, the time of flowering moth destroys flower buds and flowers. By the end of the season, between June and October, the olive pit is attacked, causing it to fall prematurely. Can be attributed losses of 30 to 40% of total losses, particularly when moisture has very high values. It is one of the most feared insects to the grower.
or Weevils of Caruncho Oliveira
Otiorrynchus / Phloeotribus scarabaeoides. Caused by coleopteran pest of the family Curculionidae. Dig galleries that attract other pests and diseases in order to prevent the movement of sap. It usually happens that the foliage dries no apparent reason.
The Tripe Oliveira - Liothirps oleae
Causing deformations to the foliage and buds.
Black Cochineal - Saissetia oleae.
It is an insect of circular shape which after prolonged contact with the foliage and branches cause the development of sooty mold.
Fly Olive – Dacus Oleae
Major pest of Oliveira caused by an insect type "fly" tiny. May cause poor oil yield, increasing the degree of acidity or premature loss of the fruit. We speak of losses of 50 to 60% of total losses.
